Taiwanese American Student Coalition: financial vice president

TASC.png

Building off my past experience as a webmaster, it has been a learning experience to adapt and succeed in my new role as financial vice president. In addition to ensuring that budgets are approved by our student association, the scope of my responsibilities are to also bring a critical thinking perspective to event planning meetings that we hold. All in the interest of spreading Taiwanese culture to the greater student body, it is important to also recognize the logistical challenges that interfere with establishing this communication line, and to overcome these challenges during the event planning process.

Each semester we plan and execute a banquet style event that take months to plan out. Keys to executing this event is putting an emphasis on open communication between the president, vice president and myself with the twenty executive board members that also have the best interest of the club at top of mind. In addition to communication, I also find I am must successful at my role when there are organized spreadsheets to keep track of tasks that are completed, to delegate roles, and to overall ensure that were are using our tangible resources and time in an efficient manner.

Havas media video investments intern

As a Video Investments Intern, I was able to get exposure to the world of client relations as I was a direct point of contact with the TV networks who would air our television ads on their platforms. In addition to planning weekly reports for the client to display where their ad dollars were being placed, I was also tasked with preparing the next quarter's projected budgeting allocations per network, based on key performance indicators and efficiency of past and current network ratings. Through this ten week experience, no time was wasted in learning how to adapt to the online working environment as well as inventory systems like National Tool BuyKit, and National BuyKit to optimize impressions delivered to our client's target audience.

The biggest takeaway from this experience was my exposure to the fast paced life of a marketing agency. I learned that critical thinking and troubleshooting are imperative to career growth and open communication and questions are always encouraged to understand abstract concepts.

devries Global: Decoding Public Relations Extern

Devries global logo.jpeg

As a decoding public relations extern at Devries, I was able to become immersed in a mid-sized agency environment that encouraged personal growth that was non discriminant of what career I wished to pursue if it were outside the realm of public relations. Through this experience, I was exposed weekly to the day to day operations of Media Relations, Influencer Marketing, Business Intelligence, Creative Strategy, Social Media Marketing, and Marketing to Gen. Z.

What I enjoyed the most from this program was being able to collaborate with those from other universities to prepare a mock-campaign for one of Devries' clients, Pandora. We had the privilege of presenting to Pandora administrators to encourage the public eye to see Pandora as more than just a charms company and open their eyes to the large product array that the store also has to offer.

The skills that I improved on the most from this experience were my public speaking and presenting skills. Each week we were tasked with completing a presentation that displayed our knowledge of the prior week's topics. This consistently pushed me outside my comfort zone, and is something I look for when seeking out professional experiences outside the classroom.

Check out my team and I's Pandora presentation below:

ACuity ADS SALEs associate intern

acuity_logo_edited.png

As a Sales Associate Intern, I was tasked to research and seek out leads who would benefit from using Acuity Ad's Illumin software. Illumin makes it easier for clients to form an omni-channel marketing strategy through an array of digital platforms.

I have gained a better understanding of Customer Relations Management systems like SalesForce, Media Radar, and MNI Targeted Media. This experience has not only broadened my education of different career opportunities, but also educated me on all that goes into the sales side of a business, and how intertwined my two majors, marketing and management information systems, are in the real world.

Through weekly meetings with the Senior Sales Director, I am grateful for this experience as it widened my technical skillset, but also assisted in my career development and time management skills as I continue furthering my education at Binghamton University.

Taiwanese American Student Coalition: Webmaster

TASC.png

As a Webmaster, I managed the club's Instagram and Facebook to ensure the student body was aware of the club events that we host. With the semester being completely remote, having a strong online presence as a club was important in reaching new and existing students within the university. Through our digital presence, we promoted community and cultural events where we united those who had a shared interest in Taiwanese culture. We definitely had to get creative in reaching out to our student body, which is why we also started a Discord channel for those who wanted to play video games with others in the club, and started sending out weekly E-Mail updates for those who didn't check our social media platforms.

I found it enlightening that we were able to use our platform to promote Asian-Owned local businesses to our student following, and drove traffic to the restaurants struggling from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Jeremy Lin: Why He's such a phenomenon

POP screenshot

In my Inquiry and Academics Writing Course, I was tasked to further elaborate on my academic paper about what was limiting women in sports, and I chose to write about the limits Asian-American Phenomenon, Jeremy Lin, faced when he rose to fame.

I was passionate about this topic particular because it resonated with who I am as a person. I grew up playing basketball since I was 8 years old, and Jeremy Lin was the only modern Asian-American NBA player in the league. Although he faced ridicule from those who claimed he was "overrated", Jeremy Lin served as a role model to me and my teammates, and proved to us that we could one day be as successful as him. Being a minority female in sports shaped me to be dedicated and persevere through adversity. I seek to carry out this mentality through all of my endeavors.

The Glass Box: What is Limiting Women in the Sports Industry and How to Shatter It

Screen Shot 2020-06-05 at 1.42.13 PM.png

In my Inquiry and Academic Writing Course, we explored a range of perspectives on contemporary issues. Building off of the existing conversation, we had to insert our own opinion and offer an additional facet to the conversation.

I chose to explore to topic of hegemonic masculinity, and how this mentality hinders the growth of the Women's sports industry, and suggested actions and behaviors to adopt in order to mitigate this learned bias. As a Asian-American girl playing basketball all her life, this topic was extremely important and exciting to write about. I was able to explore and understand what social constructs were hindering the progress of equality for women in sports, and the progress that has been made in recent years. Although there is still a large way to go to give female athletes justice for the grit and perseverance they put into the sport they love, I was hopeful for the future of female sports after writing this paper.
